Girl, 11, stabs boy, 12, inside NYC middle school: cops, sources

In the Bronx, an 11-year-old girl stabbed a 12-year-old boy with a kitchen knife inside IS 218 on Gerard Avenue. The attack occurred following a past incident between the two students, resulting in the boy being hospitalized in stable condition at Lincoln Medical Center. The girl was promptly taken into custody by authorities.
The lack of metal detectors and limited school safety agents at IS 218 raised concerns about the safety measures in place for the 800 students attending the school. Meanwhile, in Queens, an 11-year-old student discharged pepper spray in the cafeteria of JHS 217 on 144th Street, affecting approximately 100 students who were present during the lunch period. Two 12-year-old students, a boy, and a girl, were rushed to Elmhurst Hospital Center for treatment after being exposed to the pepper spray.
Law enforcement officers were able to apprehend two students in connection with the pepper spray incident and recovered the canister used in the attack. The school, part of a larger campus with a student population of around 1,300, only had three school safety agents assigned to oversee security measures, raising concerns about the ability to effectively monitor and address potential threats within the school environment.
