US soldier Declan Coady, 20, told family ‘I’m good’ in final conversation before being killed by Iranian drone strike in Kuwait

Fallen U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. Declan Coady, a 20-year-old from Des Moines, Iowa, spent his final hours in Kuwait communicating with his family back home to ease their worries amid the escalating tensions with Iran. He was one of six Army Reserve soldiers who tragically lost their lives in an Iranian drone attack at the Port of Shuaiba in Kuwait while supporting Operation Epic Fury, as confirmed by the Department of War (DoW).

Sgt. Coady, the youngest among the fallen soldiers identified by the DoW, had enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2023 as an Army information technology specialist. His family received regular updates from him, assuring them that he was safe and well. However, the messages suddenly stopped, and uniformed officers arrived at his parents’ doorstep, delivering the devastating news.

His father, Andrew Coady, recalled the moment they learned about the casualties and how they initially believed Declan was safe after he had spoken to his brother in Italy. Sadly, it was soon revealed that his operation center had been hit shortly after their last conversation.

Sgt. Coady’s unit had deployed to Kuwait in September and was scheduled to return home in May. There was a possibility for him to extend his deployment for nine more months, which he was considering before the tragic incident occurred. Despite having the option to continue his education at Drake University and commission as an officer after graduating from ROTC, Declan chose to redeploy with his unit and take online classes while in Kuwait.

Just a week before the fatal attack, he had informed his father about being recommended for a promotion from specialist to sergeant, a rank he received posthumously. His family shared memories of him, highlighting his dedication to service and love for his work in the Army.

Sgt. Coady’s sister, Keira, tearfully remembered the day he left for Kuwait, showing photos of him with their family cat. She expressed disbelief and sorrow over his sudden passing, emphasizing how much they miss him and wish they had the chance to say one more “I love you.”
