‘SNL’ Cold Open Skewers Pete Hegseth Over Iran and Kristi Noem’s Exit
On the recent episode of “Saturday Night Live,” the cold open took a humorous jab at Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s boldness in the face of escalating tensions with Iran, as well as Kristi Noem’s departure from the Department of Homeland Security following a series of mishaps.
Colin Jost portrayed a fiery Hegseth addressing the press about the military actions in Iran, exuding his usual bravado and confidence. Dressed in his signature blue suit with an American-flag pocket square, Jost’s Hegseth boasted about the success of the U.S. mission, comparing the approach to blowing up a Breathalyzer in his car.
Hegseth dismissed the notion of war with Iran, referring to it as a “situation-ship” and using risque language to describe the military tactics being employed. When asked about the possibility of sending troops to Iran, Hegseth cheekily replied with a suggestive comment about someone’s mother.
Mocking the media’s approach to reporting on the situation, Hegseth taunted them for playing chess while he claimed to be playing “Grand Theft Auto.” He even humorously dubbed himself “white Hamilton,” altering the lyrics of the famous musical to fit his persona.
Transitioning to Kristi Noem, portrayed by Padilla, the skit poked fun at her departure from the Department of Homeland Security, with Noem declaring that she “self-deported” rather than being fired. Noem’s character was portrayed as glamorous and self-absorbed, making jokes about her plastic surgery and rumored relationships.
The skit also referenced Noem’s controversial confession about shooting one of her dogs and the rumors surrounding her relationship with Trump aide Corey Lewandowski. Noem humorously mentioned her new role heading the Shield of the Americas entity and joked about her new office in a WeWork space outside of Denver.
The episode featured actor Ryan Gosling as the host for the fourth time, with British band Gorillaz as the musical guest. Gosling was promoting his latest movie, “Project Hail Mary,” set to release on March 20. This appearance on “SNL” marked Gosling’s return since his last hosting gig in 2024.
Overall, the “Saturday Night Live” cold open provided a satirical take on current political figures and events, blending humor with social commentary in a typical SNL fashion.
