‘Pluribus’ Cast Was Almost Naked, Vince Gilligan Reveals
The Costume Design of “Pluribus”: A Closer Look
The costume designer for “Pluribus” found themselves facing an interesting challenge when it came to outfitting the characters of the hive mind. Originally, creator Vince Gilligan contemplated having the characters be naked, but quickly realized the practicality and logistics of such a decision. Lead actor Rhea Seehorn also expressed her relief at not having to act alongside 300 naked extras, highlighting the absurdity of such a scenario.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world where a virus merges everyone’s consciousness into a hive mind, the characters of “Pluribus” wear clothes for protection against the elements. Costume designer Jennifer Bryan explained how the characters’ clothing evolved over time to become more minimal and functional, reflecting the loss of individuality within the hive mind.
At the start of the series, characters are seen wearing the outfits they had on at the time of “The Joining,” including work uniforms for those who were on duty. As time passes, the need for clothing as a form of expression diminishes, leading to a more utilitarian approach to costume design.
The panel discussion at SXSW also included composer Dave Porter, executive producer Trina Siopy, and moderator Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television. Together, they shed light on the thought process and creativity behind the costumes of “Pluribus,” showcasing the attention to detail and world-building that went into creating the post-apocalyptic universe of the show.
