Sonny Gray silences Milwaukee 5-0 as the Red Sox roll to their first back-to-back wins
The Boston Red Sox secured their first back-to-back wins of the season with a 5-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. Sonny Gray delivered a stellar performance on the mound, pitching 6 1/3 shutout innings while allowing just three hits and two walks. Shane Drohan, making his major league debut for the Brewers, struggled with his control and surrendered three runs in the third inning.
In the pivotal third inning, Ceddanne Rafaela kickstarted the Red Sox offense with a leadoff single. Isiah Kiner-Falefa followed with a bunt single, setting the stage for Andruw Monasterio to draw a walk and load the bases. Drohan then issued a walk to Willson Contreras, bringing home the first run of the game. Wilyer Abreu’s hard-hit grounder resulted in an infield hit, scoring another run. Trevor Story capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
Drohan’s struggles continued as he walked Caleb Durbin to reload the bases before being pulled from the game. The Brewers threatened in the seventh inning, but a crucial challenge by the Red Sox led to an inning-ending strikeout.
In the bottom of the seventh, Boston added two insurance runs with three consecutive singles. A replay challenge overturned what was initially ruled an inning-ending double play, allowing the Red Sox to extend their lead.
Looking ahead, the Brewers will enjoy a day off before heading to Washington for a three-game series. RHP Chad Patrick is slated to take the mound against righty Jake Irvin. Meanwhile, the Red Sox will have a day off before traveling to St. Louis for a series against the Cardinals. LHP Connelly Early is set to face off against righty Dustin May.
The Red Sox’s victory over the Brewers showcased their resilience and ability to capitalize on opportunities. With Sonny Gray leading the way on the mound and timely hitting throughout the lineup, Boston looks to build on their recent success and continue their winning ways as the season progresses.
