Jonathan Roldan, a 35-year-old man from Humboldt Park, is facing charges of first-degree murder for allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend’s new partner, Andrew Garay, in a tragic incident that unfolded outside the woman’s home. The horrifying event was captured on surveillance cameras, showing the victim waiting in his car with the woman’s child nearby as Roldan approached and fired a single gunshot, prosecutors revealed on Sunday.

According to court documents, Garay had been in a relationship with Roldan’s ex-girlfriend for four years, with the couple sharing two children together. On the night of January 23, Garay picked up the woman from work, dropped off one of her children at a friend’s house, and then drove them both to her residence. After dropping them off in front of the house, Garay remained in his car, waiting for them to enter.

It was at this moment that Roldan emerged from a nearby gangway, walked up to Garay’s car, and fired a fatal shot through the front passenger window, striking Garay in the head. The victim’s car rolled forward before coming to a stop, while Roldan fled the scene. The woman’s screams of horror were captured on camera as she recognized the shooter and called out his name in disbelief.

Police investigation revealed that Roldan had been loaned the woman’s white Jeep Compass before the shooting, and license plate readers tracked the vehicle’s movements leading up to the attack. The woman identified Roldan as the perpetrator on CPD bodycam footage, leading to his arrest and subsequent detention pending trial by Judge James Murphy III. Prosecutors noted that Roldan had a prior conviction for animal cruelty.

In the wake of Garay’s tragic death, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to honor his memory. Described as a kind-hearted man who was dedicated to his family, friends, and work, Garay was remembered as someone who always put others before himself.
