A Chicago Woman Arrested for Allegedly Smashing Police Car Windshield with a Shovel

A Chicago woman, identified as Jane Loveless, is facing felony charges after a viral video surfaced showing her smashing the windshield of a Chicago police squad car with a shovel in the Gold Coast area.

The incident, captured on video and shared by Chicago Critter, took place on Wednesday, April 8, on Dearborn Parkway. In the footage, Loveless, 24, is seen standing next to a Chicago Police Department squad car, aggressively striking the windshield with a shovel as officers attempt to intervene.

According to a CPD report, officers were responding to a criminal damage call in the first block of West Division Street when bystanders directed them to Loveless, who had reportedly stolen a shovel and used it to damage multiple vehicles in the area.

Despite attempts by the police to de-escalate the situation, Loveless continued to act erratically and proceeded to damage not only the police car but also three other vehicles parked nearby, including a 2026 BMW M440i, a 2015 Chevy Equinox, and a 2024 Audi Q5.

Following the incident, Loveless was taken into custody and charged with four counts of criminal damage to property, with three of the charges classified as felonies. Despite the seriousness of the charges, prosecutors opted not to request her detention, and she was subsequently released by Judge James Costello.

The motive behind Loveless’s actions remains unclear, as she allegedly told the police that she damaged the vehicles for reasons unknown.
