Nebraska proposes $600 million renovation of Memorial Stadium to be finished in time for 2028 season

Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium is set to undergo a massive $600 million renovation that will enhance the fan experience and generate significant revenue for the athletic department. The plan, known as “Big Red Rebuild,” is expected to be approved next week and will be funded by a combination of $250 million in philanthropic support and $350 million in private bond financing. The project is scheduled for completion by the start of the 2028 football season and will be presented to the university regents at their upcoming meeting in Lincoln.

Athletic director Troy Dannen expressed excitement about the transformation of the historic venue, stating that the upgrades will not only cater to the needs of Nebraska fans but also position the stadium for success in the future. The renovation aims to create a best-in-class fan experience, drive revenue for the university, offer new programming opportunities for Nebraskans, support student-athletes, and ensure Nebraska remains competitive in the evolving landscape of college athletics.

Memorial Stadium has been home to the Cornhuskers since 1923 and boasts an impressive NCAA-record sellout streak of 410 games dating back to 1962. The proposed renovation will include enhancements to amenities throughout the stadium, the addition of a 360-degree main concourse connecting the east and west sides, and an increase in seating capacity to 80,000, including 20,000 new chairback seats.

In addition to football games, the revamped stadium will also host concerts and other events year-round, with annual revenue projected to increase by 40% to an estimated $95 million. Construction is slated to begin following the conclusion of the 2026 football season.

Over the years, Memorial Stadium has seen incremental improvements, such as the introduction of luxury suites in 1999 and an expansion to over 85,000 seats in 2013. A previous $450 million renovation plan was approved in 2023 but was reevaluated to ensure the scope, strategy, and costs were aligned with the university’s goals.

The ambitious renovation of Memorial Stadium represents a significant investment in the future of Nebraska athletics and the fan experience. With a focus on modernizing the venue while preserving its rich history, the project is poised to elevate the gameday atmosphere and generate substantial revenue for the university.
