Inside In-N-Out’s ‘university’ designed to train the future leaders of the fast-food giant

Did you know that one popular fast-food chain runs its own university alongside its burger business?

In-N-Out Burger operates In-N-Out University, a training program located in Baldwin Park, California, near its original restaurant site.

This training center is dedicated to preparing employees for management roles by focusing on restaurant operations, cleanliness standards, and customer service, as stated on the company’s website.

Unlike traditional colleges, In-N-Out University does not offer academic degrees. Instead, it focuses on practical skills required to succeed in the fast-food industry.

The training program is exclusive to employees who are either internally promoted or apply for a management position, according to a report by The Takeout.

This unique initiative stems from In-N-Out Burger’s early growth strategy.

Founded in 1948 by Harry and Esther Snyder, In-N-Out Burger started as California’s first drive-thru hamburger stand in Baldwin Park. The original restaurant focused on fresh ingredients and made-to-order meals within a small 100-square-foot space.

The chain’s expansion was further fueled by Rich Snyder, their son, who took over operations in the 1970s. Under his leadership, structured training programs were introduced near the original restaurant to ensure experienced leadership in new locations.

Formal management training programs were a key part of the brand’s early growth, with a dedicated building for In-N-Out University opening in 1984 on the site of the Snyder family’s former home.

This emphasis on training has been pivotal in In-N-Out’s continued success.

From a single drive-thru location, In-N-Out has expanded to over 400 restaurants across multiple states, with a focus on promoting managers from within the company.
