JPMorgan Chase Abruptly Hikes S&P 500 Target for 2026, Says One Investment Theme Driving Bullish Momentum: Report
JPMorgan Chase Raises S&P 500 Year-End Forecast
Banking giant JPMorgan Chase has revised its year-end forecast for the S&P 500, projecting a higher target of 7,600 compared to its previous estimate of 7,200. The decision comes as the bank’s team of strategists, led by Dubravko Lakos-Bujas, anticipates two key factors driving this upward revision.
One of the primary reasons for the increased forecast is the renewed investor interest in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. JPMorgan’s analysts believe that the AI industry’s growth potential will contribute to stronger earnings for companies within the S&P 500. Additionally, the team points to easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the potential de-escalation of conflicts between the United States and Iran, as a positive factor influencing market sentiment.
The bank now predicts the S&P 500 earnings per share (EPS) for 2026 to reach $330, up from its previous projection of $315. Looking ahead to 2027, the estimated EPS has been revised to $385 from $355. Despite these adjustments, the forward multiple remains unchanged at 22x.
Lakos-Bujas notes that a quick resolution to geopolitical uncertainties could lead to a potential expansion of the forward multiple to 23x, potentially pushing the S&P 500 projection for 2026 to around 8,000.
Furthermore, the team highlights the role of research firm Anthropic in revitalizing interest in AI investments. Anthropic’s unveiling of its latest powerful AI model, Mythos, on April 7th has reportedly sparked a significant uptrend in AI-related equities, with 66% of these stocks outperforming the broader market.
Despite the optimistic outlook, JPMorgan’s strategists caution that the market may experience a short-term consolidation phase before resuming its upward trajectory. Risks such as sustained high oil prices and lingering geopolitical tensions, although improving, could potentially impact market dynamics in the near term.
