Bank Employee Allegedly Drains $164,918 From Customer’s Account, Spends Loot on Herself and Family Members

A shocking case of financial misconduct has come to light, with a bank insider accused of withdrawing a significant amount of money from a senior citizen’s account without authorization. According to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), Marissa Murillo, an associate banker at the Bank of Montreal’s Chicago branch, allegedly committed this offense over a two-year period.

The OCC’s report states that between January 2023 and November 2024, Murillo made multiple unauthorized debits from an elderly customer’s account for her personal use and the benefit of her family members. This misconduct resulted in a loss of $164,918 for the bank. As a consequence of these actions, Murillo has been banned from participating in the affairs of federally-insured banks and other regulated financial institutions indefinitely.

The OCC’s statement highlights that Murillo’s behavior violated the law, led to financial gain for herself, and caused a financial loss for the bank, all of which involved personal dishonesty. While Murillo has agreed to the prohibition order, she has neither accepted nor denied any wrongdoing.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of trust and integrity in the financial sector. Customers rely on banks and their employees to safeguard their assets and act in their best interests. Any breach of this trust can have serious consequences, as demonstrated by the OCC’s actions against Murillo.
