James Comey indicted again, this time over seashell Instagram post
Former FBI Director James Comey has once again found himself in legal trouble as a federal grand jury in North Carolina has indicted him over a controversial Instagram post from last year. The post in question featured a picture showing the numbers “86 47” written in seashells on the beach, accompanied by the caption “Cool shell formation on my beach walk.” The indictment alleges that this post constituted a threat against President Donald Trump, who is the 47th president of the United States.
This new indictment comes after a previous case against Comey was thrown out by a judge on unrelated charges. The charges in the current indictment include threats against the president and successors, as well as transmitting a threat in interstate commerce. Prosecutors argue that the post could be interpreted as a serious threat to harm the President of the United States by any reasonable recipient familiar with the circumstances.
Comey, however, maintains his innocence and asserts that the post was not intended as a threat. In response to the indictment, he reiterated his belief in the independent federal judiciary and expressed confidence in his innocence. He emphasized the importance of upholding the values of the Department of Justice and called on the public to “keep the faith.”
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who announced the charges, defended the decision to prosecute Comey, stating that threatening the president is a serious offense that warrants legal action. He emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding federal law and prosecuting individuals who violate it, regardless of their status or title.
The case against Comey is expected to be challenging for prosecutors, as they will need to prove that the Instagram post constituted a “true threat” as defined by the Supreme Court. The use of the phrase “86 47” by other individuals, including politicians and commentators, adds complexity to the case and raises questions about the implications for free speech under the First Amendment.
President Trump, who previously called for Comey to be charged over the post, alleged that it was a call for his assassination. Comey removed the post following backlash and expressed regret over any association with violence. The post drew criticism from the Trump administration, with calls for Comey to be imprisoned.
This new indictment adds to the legal challenges faced by Comey, who was previously indicted on unrelated charges for allegedly lying to Congress. His legal team argued that the case was politically motivated, leading to the dismissal of the charges. Comey remains steadfast in his innocence and unwavering in his belief in the judicial system.
The Department of Justice, under Acting Attorney General Blanche, has been stepping up investigations of individuals perceived as political foes of President Trump. This includes recent indictments against other prominent figures, signaling a broader effort to hold individuals accountable for alleged wrongdoing. The legal proceedings against Comey are likely to be closely watched as they unfold.
