Brewing coastal storm may slam the Northeast with weekend washout

The Northeast and New England are bracing for an unseasonable cooldown as heavy rain moves in, bringing relief to areas experiencing severe drought. The region was hit with an initial round of rain late Wednesday, with another bout expected to bring 1 to 2 inches of rainfall through Friday night. Some areas could see localized pockets of 2 to 3 inches, particularly in New Hampshire and Maine.

While there is a chance for isolated flash flooding, no official flood outlooks have been issued. A storm developing off the coast of North Carolina is set to move northward and could evolve into a nor’easter, potentially bringing more soaking rain to the northeastern parts of the Interstate 95 corridor over the weekend.

The exact track of the system is still uncertain, with impacts dependent on whether it moves closer to the Eastern Seaboard or farther east. Major cities like Boston, Portland, and New York are currently facing significant rainfall deficits, making the upcoming rain particularly beneficial for the drought-stricken far northern New England.

Despite the potential for rain and wind impacts along the coast, the forecast suggests that some areas, like the New York tri-state area and coastal New England, may see rain late Saturday. As the region prepares for the incoming weather system, residents are urged to stay updated on local forecasts and be prepared for possible flooding.
