Inside the AI doom machine — and who is benefiting from it

As the Elon Musk–Sam Altman trial in Oakland, Calif., captures the spotlight this week, a lesser-known Capitol Hill event on the other side of the country may hold even greater significance for the future of AI in America.

Senator Bernie Sanders recently hosted a panel featuring prominent Chinese AI officials affiliated with Beijing’s Ministry of Science and Technology, such as Xue Lan from Tsinghua University and Zeng Yi from the Beijing Institute of AI Safety and Governance. The panel discussed the “existential threat” posed by artificial intelligence and the importance of international cooperation.

This gathering highlights the emergence of a peculiar alliance in modern politics, where AI doomerism — the belief that advanced AI presents a threat to humanity — has brought together a diverse group of stakeholders. Socialists, Hollywood unions, organizers of the January 6 events, and Chinese government representatives are now aligned in their efforts to impede American AI progress under the guise of safeguarding humanity.

Nathan Leamer, the executive director of Build American AI, expressed concern over the significant resources being allocated towards AI doomerism without considering the potential consequences, such as America falling behind in the global AI race.

A recent report from the Bull Moose Project revealed that AI doomerism supporters have already spent billions of dollars and have pledged even more towards their cause.

Despite the legitimate concerns surrounding AI, such as deepfakes and job displacement, critics believe that the current narrative has veered off course. The push to limit AI development in America is seen as a coordinated effort to impede innovation and hinder global competitiveness.

Recent events, such as a bipartisan town hall organized by Amy Kremer, known for her involvement in the January 6 events, alongside progressives and AI engineers, underscore the growing momentum to constrain the power of AI.

Furthermore, the Future of Life policy group released an AI declaration aimed at holding AI companies accountable, with support from various ideological groups.

While concerns about AI are valid, the current narrative is criticized for its sensationalism. Some groups have resorted to extreme labeling and rhetoric, raising questions about their true motives and intentions.

Techno-optimists argue that the alarmist approach is hindering the development of a coherent framework to support innovation in America. They caution against state-level regulations that could stifle innovation and hand over technological leadership to other countries.

Despite the billions being poured into AI doomerism efforts in the US, China continues to surge ahead in AI development without such constraints, posing a significant risk to America’s competitiveness.

As debates on the future of AI intensify, it remains crucial to strike a balance between regulation and innovation to ensure America’s position as a global leader in artificial intelligence.
