Prosecutors provide detailed account of shooting that left one CPD officer dead, another fighting for his life
Prosecutors provided a detailed account of the events that transpired on Saturday morning involving Alphonso Talley, a man who had escaped electronic monitoring. The crime spree began at a Family Dollar store in Albany Park, where Talley and an accomplice violently robbed a cashier at gunpoint. The cashier was forced into a back office, where she was struck and robbed of her belongings.
Talley and his accomplice fled the scene on Lime scooters, but the cashier activated the store’s panic button and provided descriptions to the police. Using GPS tracking, officers located Talley near North Troy Street, where he was attempting to order an Uber. He was found with bloodstained cash and the cashier’s wallet in his possession.
After being taken into custody and transported to Swedish Covenant Hospital, Talley managed to conceal a handgun and fatally shot Officer Bartholomew while attempting to escape. Another officer was critically injured in the shooting. Talley then moved through the hospital, confronting staff and patients while armed and naked.
He eventually fled the hospital, running through residential yards before being apprehended hiding under a porch. Talley has a history of felony convictions, including armed robbery, and was on electronic monitoring for pending cases at the time of the shootings.
Talley faces a multitude of charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, armed kidnapping, and possession of a firearm by a felon. The gravity of his actions and criminal history led Judge D’Anthony Thedford to order Talley’s detention, deeming him too dangerous to be released.
The harrowing events of that Saturday morning highlight the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the public alike. The swift actions of the police in apprehending Talley and bringing him to justice serve as a testament to their dedication and bravery in the face of such senseless violence.
