Up to $5,000 per Person Incoming in Data Breach Settlement Affecting 530,000 People in Minnesota and Wisconsin

Pawn America, a pawn shop chain, has recently agreed to pay out $3.185 million to settle a class action lawsuit stemming from a data breach that exposed sensitive customer information. The settlement comes after hackers accessed the company’s network, resulting in a ransomware attack discovered on October 3rd, 2021.

The breach, which affected approximately 530,000 customers, exposed a range of personal data including full names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, dates of birth, and financial account information. In response to the incident, Pawn America began notifying customers on November 19th, 2021.

As part of the settlement, eligible class members may receive up to $5,000 for documented losses incurred as a result of the data breach. Claimants who do not provide documentation for losses can still receive $30, with California claimants eligible for $50. The proposed settlement also allocates around $1 million for attorneys’ fees.

The deadline to object to the settlement is June 5th, with claims required to be submitted by July 6th. A final court hearing on the matter is scheduled for September 9th. Customers impacted by the breach are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary steps to secure their information.
