New pitch to install permanent gates at iconic Washington Square Park reignites debate among NYers’

The debate over installing permanent gates at Washington Square Park continues to divide New Yorkers, with some advocating for enhanced safety measures and others arguing for the preservation of the park’s open and inclusive atmosphere. The proposal to fence off the entrances comes in response to concerns about late-night activities in the park, including drug use and overdoses.

Local resident George Vallonakis, who played a role in the park’s redesign years ago, supports the idea of permanent gates to enforce the park’s midnight curfew. He believes that the current NYPD barricades are not sufficient and that proper gates would not only improve safety but also enhance the park’s aesthetic appeal.

Washington Square Park has a long history of fencing, dating back to the 1820s when the park was locked with permanent gates. Vallonakis argues that it is time to replace the unattractive police barricades with more appropriate gates that reflect the park’s historical significance.

However, not everyone is in favor of the proposed gates. Some residents and visitors feel that fencing off the park would detract from its vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. They view the park as a place for community gatherings, artistic expression, and personal connection, and fear that permanent gates would restrict access and limit the park’s appeal.

Despite the ongoing debate, NYC Parks has not yet received a formal proposal for installing gates at Washington Square Park. The community board’s Parks & Waterfront Committee is currently drafting a resolution to explore closure recommendations, with input from the park’s Conservancy.

As the discussion continues, it remains to be seen whether Washington Square Park will undergo changes to enhance safety or if efforts will be made to preserve its historically “free” spirit. The park’s future will likely be shaped by a balance between security concerns and the desire to maintain its unique charm and character.
