‘Harry Potter’ Agent Signals Support for Paramount-Warner Bros Merger

Neil Blair, the founder of The Blair Partnership, a literary and entertainment agency, has expressed his confidence in the merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Blair believes that the merger will continue to “honor the legacy” of the beloved “Harry Potter” franchise, which is one of the agency’s most well-known clients. The “Harry Potter” creator, J.K. Rowling, has had a longstanding relationship with Warner Bros., with multiple screen adaptations, video games, merchandise, and theme park rides based on her books.

Currently, a new re-imagining of the “Harry Potter” book series is in production and is set to premiere on HBO this winter. Blair stated to Variety that he is excited about the proposed partnership with Paramount Skydance and is confident that the merged company, once the Warner Bros. Discovery deal closes, will continue to honor Rowling’s iconic stories while also looking towards the future of the franchise.

Paramount successfully outbid Netflix with a $111 billion offer to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery in late February. While the deal has been accepted by shareholders, it is still pending approval from regulators in the U.S. and Europe. Blair is not the only industry executive supporting the merger, with “Avatar” director James Cameron and AMC head Adam Aron also backing the deal for its commitment to theatrical releases.

David Ellison, the chairman and CEO of Paramount Skydance, revealed plans to double the company’s film slate to 30 films a year once the merger is finalized, emphasizing his dedication to the theatrical experience. However, not everyone is in favor of the merger, with actor Mark Ruffalo leading the opposition. Ruffalo, along with American Economic Liberties Project research director Matt Stoller, penned an op-ed for The New York Times outlining their concerns about the potential harms of the merger on Hollywood.

An open letter expressing opposition to the deal, organized by Ruffalo and signed by over 4,000 individuals, including actors like Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, and directors such as Yorgos Lanthimos and Sofia Coppola, has garnered attention. Despite the differing opinions on the merger, it is clear that the entertainment industry is undergoing significant changes, and the future of iconic franchises like “Harry Potter” will be closely watched as the Paramount-Warner Bros. deal progresses.
