Netflix is spying on children and selling user data: Texas AG lawsuit

The state of Texas files lawsuit against Netflix for alleged data collection practices

The state of Texas has filed a lawsuit against streaming giant Netflix, accusing the company of spying on children and other consumers by collecting their data without consent and designing the platform to be addictive. Texas claims that Netflix has misled consumers by stating that it doesn’t collect or share user data while actually tracking and selling viewers’ habits and preferences to data brokers and advertising technology companies.

The lawsuit, led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, alleges that Netflix’s main goal is to keep viewers glued to the screen, harvest their data, and then monetize it for profit. Paxton stated that Netflix has a surveillance program in place to illegally collect and profit from Texans’ personal data without their consent.

Among the accusations, Netflix is said to have used “dark patterns” to keep users engaged on the platform, such as an autoplay feature that automatically starts a new show after the current one ends. The lawsuit seeks to require Netflix to stop the unlawful collection and disclosure of user data, disable autoplay by default on children’s profiles, and impose injunctive relief and civil penalties.
