Wall Street Journal Punctures Trump’s Latest Fantasy With A Pointed Question

The Wall Street Journal’s conservative editorial board responded to President Trump’s latest suggestion of turning Venezuela into the 51st U.S. state with a pointed question. They questioned whether Venezuela would have to hold an election like the current 50 states if it were to become part of the United States.

The editorial highlighted the complications surrounding Trump’s proposal to control Venezuela and its major oil reserves, without mentioning the constitutional challenges it would face. They noted that acting President Delcy Rodríguez was not elected but inherited the role from Nicolás Maduro after a U.S. military operation led to his capture.

Rodríguez has not set an election date, and Trump has not pushed for one. The editorial also mentioned the risks faced by exiled opposition leader María Corina Machado, who plans to return to Venezuela later this year despite the threat of arrest or assassination.
