Man set to be executed for killing his ex-girlfriend and her 7-month-old daughter

Raymond Johnson, a 52-year-old man from Oklahoma, was scheduled to be executed on Thursday for the brutal murders of his ex-girlfriend, Brooke Whitaker, and her 7-month-old daughter, Kya, nearly 20 years ago. The heinous crime took place in June 2007 when Johnson got into an argument with Whitaker at her home in Tulsa.

During the argument, Johnson viciously attacked Whitaker with a metal claw hammer, causing her skull to fracture and inflicting over 20 lacerations on her face and scalp. Despite her injuries, Whitaker pleaded with Johnson to spare her and her sleeping daughter, Kya. Tragically, Johnson proceeded to douse Whitaker and the house with gasoline before setting it on fire. Whitaker ultimately succumbed to her injuries and smoke inhalation, while baby Kya died from severe burns.

The Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office described Johnson as a “cruel murderer who inflicted unimaginable pain and suffering on his victims.” Despite multiple appeals and arguments by Johnson’s legal team, including claims of an illegal arrest, coerced confession, and inadequate legal representation, he was denied clemency by the Pardon and Parole Board in April.

At his clemency hearing, Johnson expressed remorse and asked for forgiveness from the victims’ family, stating that he was a changed person. However, Whitaker’s family members urged for the execution to proceed, believing that it would finally bring an end to their decades-long pain and suffering.

If Johnson’s execution is carried out as planned, he would be the second person to be put to death in Oklahoma this year and the 11th in the country. Despite his previous conviction for manslaughter in 1996, Johnson now faces the ultimate consequence for his heinous crimes.

The case of Raymond Johnson serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence and the irreparable harm that can result from such senseless acts of violence. As the criminal justice system moves forward with Johnson’s execution, the memory of Brooke Whitaker and baby Kya will forever live on in the hearts of their loved ones.
