Billy Crudup Was First Hopper Casting, Creators Say

When it comes to the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things,” the casting of Chief Jim Hopper played a crucial role in shaping the show’s success. In a recent interview with the creators of the show, Matt and Ross Duffer, it was revealed that their original choice for the role was not David Harbour, who ultimately brought the character to life on screen.

During a conversation with “Happy Sad Confused” host Josh Horowitz, David Harbour himself asked the Duffer Brothers about the casting process for Hopper and whether he was their first choice for the role. The Duffers disclosed that their initial pick for the character was actually Billy Crudup, not Josh Brolin as many had speculated.

It turns out that Billy Crudup, known for his work in films like “Almost Famous” and “Watchmen,” passed on the role of Chief Hopper. At the time, Crudup was not heavily involved in television projects, which paved the way for David Harbour to step into the role that would ultimately become iconic.

According to the Duffer Brothers, Harbour’s audition tape immediately impressed the casting directors, who believed he was perfect for the role. With just one take, Harbour captured the essence of Hopper, leading to his casting without hesitation. This decision proved to be a pivotal moment for the show, as Harbour’s portrayal of the character resonated with audiences worldwide.

Throughout all five seasons of “Stranger Things,” David Harbour’s performance as Chief Jim Hopper stood out among the ensemble cast. His dynamic relationship with characters like Joyce Byers (played by Winona Ryder) and Eleven (portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown) added depth and emotion to the series, making Hopper a fan-favorite character.

As the show concluded its run on Netflix, Harbour’s portrayal of Chief Hopper remains a highlight of “Stranger Things,” showcasing the importance of casting choices in shaping the narrative and success of a television series. While Billy Crudup may have been the original pick for the role, it was ultimately David Harbour who brought Hopper to life in a way that captivated audiences and solidified his place in TV history.
