Elon Musk loses lawsuit against OpenAI in unanimous verdict
OAKLAND, Calif. — Elon Musk faced a setback on Monday as jurors ruled against him in the high-profile trial concerning the future of OpenAI. The artificial intelligence giant was found not liable to Musk, the world’s richest person, for allegedly deviating from its mission to benefit humanity.
The unanimous verdict came swiftly after just hours of deliberation by the nine-member federal jury, who determined that Musk’s case was brought too late.
This conclusion marks the end of a three-week trial that gripped Silicon Valley and beyond, featuring prominent figures in the tech industry. Testimonies were given by individuals such as Musk advisor Shivon Zillis, OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
The verdict averts a potential upheaval in the AI landscape at a crucial juncture. Musk is preparing for a public offering for SpaceX, which merged with his AI startup, while OpenAI is also moving towards an IPO that could have been affected by Musk’s desired unwinding of its for-profit structure.
Musk’s lawsuit alleged that OpenAI violated its charitable mission when it transitioned into a for-profit entity and amassed billions in funding. Microsoft was also implicated in the suit for allegedly supporting this action with a significant investment.
Throughout the trial, Musk emphasized, “It is not OK to steal a charity,” as he sought to hold OpenAI accountable for its actions.
Despite the legal battle, OpenAI figures maintained that Musk was aware of and endorsed the organization’s for-profit initiatives. Evidence presented during the trial suggested that Musk supported the idea of securing venture funding to compete effectively in the AI industry.
The proceedings included details of a 2017 meeting at Musk’s residence, where discussions about a for-profit entity were described as celebratory amid the presence of alcohol and a festive atmosphere.
Legal experts following the case noted the evolving strength of Musk’s arguments throughout the trial, particularly in challenging Altman’s credibility.
Musk’s lawyer emphasized the importance of trustworthiness, highlighting discrepancies in Altman’s statements as revealed by former OpenAI board members.
As the trial concluded, Musk’s lawyer used a metaphorical illustration to underscore the issue of trust, comparing it to crossing a bridge built on questionable foundations.
Altman responded to Musk’s accusations, expressing disbelief at the framing of the situation.
