James Wood hits inside-the-park grand slam after ball ricochets off Nick Morabito’s glove

James Wood delivered a harsh lesson to Nick Morabito in his major league debut on Wednesday night at Nationals Park. The Nationals’ slugger hit a deep fly ball to left field that slipped out of the Mets rookie’s glove and resulted in an inside-the-park grand slam.

The game started smoothly for Mets starter Nolan McLean, who quickly got two outs in the bottom of the second inning. However, he then allowed a double, a single, and a hit by pitch, setting the stage for Wood’s dramatic at-bat.

Wood, known for his power at the plate, launched a high fly ball deep into left field, forcing Morabito to retreat to the fence. Despite a valiant effort, the ball bounced off Morabito’s glove and rolled all the way to center field. Center fielder Tyrone Taylor seemed disoriented and stayed near Morabito, who was sprawled on the warning track. By the time Morabito recovered and retrieved the ball, Wood had completed an inside-the-park grand slam, a rare feat in baseball.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Morabito was hit by a pitch in his second plate appearance in the top of the third inning. However, he redeemed himself in the bottom half by making a spectacular leaping catch in the stands on a Jorbit Vivas fly ball, turning it into a sacrifice fly.

Prior to his call-up, Morabito had an impressive performance in Triple-A Syracuse, boasting a .754 OPS with four home runs and 14 stolen bases in 41 games.

The game served as a valuable learning experience for Morabito, who will look to bounce back from the rough start to his major league career. Despite the setback, his potential as an outfield prospect remains promising as he continues to develop his skills at the highest level of the game.
