Scammers Drain $850,000 Life Savings From Elderly Couple in Devastating Con Job: Report

An Elderly Couple Faces Losing Their Home After Falling Victim to FBI Imposter Scam

An elderly Southern California couple is at risk of losing their long-time home after scammers posing as FBI agents managed to steal nearly $1 million from them.

According to a report by KTLA, the couple was contacted in February last year by scammers who claimed that they needed to clear their names by converting their money into cryptocurrency. The scammers alleged that this was necessary for the FBI to trace the funds as part of an ongoing investigation.

The victims were provided with fake documents that purported someone had stolen their identities and opened fraudulent bank accounts using their information. They were then informed that they were suspects in the case.

Believing they were in contact with legitimate federal agents, the couple withdrew their retirement savings and even took out loans in order to hand over approximately $850,000 to the scammers.

The scammers reassured the victims that by converting the money into cryptocurrency, the authorities would be able to track the origins of the funds and exonerate them in the investigation.

Ultimately, the couple converted their savings into cryptocurrency and sent it to the scammers, who they thought were cooperating with the government.

As a result of this devastating scam, the couple now faces the possibility of losing the home they have resided in for over 37 years, having lost their life savings in the process.
