Katseye Performs ‘Pinky Up’ at American Music Awards

Teahouses and raves may seem like an unlikely combination, but Katseye defied expectations by bringing a hyper-pop dance party to a brightly-colored tearoom during their performance of “Pinky Up” at the American Music Awards. The energetic number captivated the audience just before the group took home the award for best new artist on the CBS/Paramount+ telecast.

Anticipation was high for Katseye’s performance, especially considering the fervent support of their fan base. “Pinky Up” stood out during the three-hour telecast with its elaborate production values and vibrant aesthetics. Prior to the group’s appearance, extras mimicked drinking tea and indulging in pastries with their pinky fingers raised, in a playful nod to the etiquette associated with tea drinking. The performance escalated into a frenzy of EDM beats and pink hues as the members burst out of a giant pink teddy bear, adorned in costumes featuring tiny bear faces reminiscent of the Grateful Dead’s iconic mascot.

During their acceptance speech for new artist of the year, Katseye emphasized their commitment to celebrating diversity and representing their respective cultures. Lara Raj expressed gratitude for the platform that allowed them to showcase their unique identities through music.

The group received a star-studded introduction from EJAE and Rei Ami, known for their work on “KPop Demon Hunters.” The mutual admiration between the two acts was evident, with Rei Ami describing their collaboration at Coachella as a “beautiful meeting of girl power.” The performance of “Pinky Up” served as a preview of Katseye’s upcoming EP, “Wild,” set for release on August 14.

Katseye entered the night with three nominations and delivered their first awards performance since the Grammys. The absence of Manon Bannerman, who announced a hiatus from the group, was noted during the AMAs performance, marking a transitional period for the ensemble.

Overall, Katseye’s electrifying performance at the American Music Awards showcased their unique blend of music, visuals, and cultural influences. The group’s dedication to diversity and inclusivity shone through their music and performances, solidifying their status as rising stars in the music industry.
