Fitbit Air Users Suffer Connectivity Issue with Android Phones
Google’s latest screenless fitness tracker, the Fitbit Air, has finally hit the market today. Early users who managed to get their hands on the device early, however, were met with a frustrating issue when trying to pair it with their smartphones. The problem seems to primarily affect Android users, with certain devices lacking the necessary version 5.0 update of the Google Health app. This has resulted in an error message prompting users to update the app before they can connect their Fitbit Air.
The issue has gained attention on Reddit and even prompted a response from an official Google employee. The employee assured users that they are working on expediting the rollout of the updated app on Android via the Play Store to accommodate early deliveries. In the meantime, iOS users can already update the app through the App Store.
Some users have found a workaround by side-loading the Google Health app, but the hope is for a permanent fix to be in place before the Fitbit Air is widely available to those who pre-ordered the device. Additionally, a user inquired about the possibility of Google Health sending data to Apple Health and Apple Fitness apps. The representative confirmed that this feature will be coming soon.
Aside from the connectivity issues, the Fitbit Air has sparked discussions about its potential to rival the established Whoop Strap 5.0. Both devices feature a screenless design and focus on health and fitness tracking, but the Fitbit Air comes at a much lower price point of £84.99/$99.99. In comparison, the Whoop Strap requires a mandatory annual subscription starting at £160/$199 for the device to function.
While the Fitbit Air does offer a subscription option with Google Health Premium, it is not necessary to access the core tracking features. The premium tier provides access to Health Coach, Google’s AI-powered personal trainer that can assist users in structuring their workout routines, tracking calorie intake, and more.
Overall, despite the initial pairing issues, the Fitbit Air presents a budget-friendly alternative in the fitness tracker market and has the potential to revolutionize fitness tracking for users.
