SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Brooklyn Rivera, Indigenous Leader Imprisoned by Nicaraguan Government, Dies
Brooklyn Rivera, a renowned Indigenous leader from Nicaragua who spent years fighting for the rights of his community and was imprisoned by the government in September 2023, has passed away, the Nicaraguan government announced.
The government stated that Rivera succumbed to a bacterial infection after his health deteriorated following a battle with COVID-19, which led to his physical and neurological decline.
Human rights activists and organizations worldwide condemned Rivera’s death, criticizing the government’s handling of his case and referring to their previous statements as “unconscionable cynicism.”
The U.S. had called for Rivera’s release after photos of him in critical condition were released by the Nicaraguan government.
The Inter-American Center for Legal Assistance in Human Rights also denounced Rivera’s death, calling for those responsible to be held criminally accountable.
Albert R. Ramdin, secretary general of the Organization of American States, expressed deep concern over Rivera’s passing and called for an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Rivera, a leader of the Miskito people in Nicaragua, played a significant role in advocating for Indigenous rights and autonomy in the region.
His decades-long fight against the ruling Sandinista government helped secure limited autonomy for Indigenous people in Nicaragua.
Since 2018, there have been numerous cases of land usurpation and threats against Indigenous communities in Nicaragua, highlighting the ongoing struggle for recognition and respect for Indigenous rights.
