Rebecca Bennett wins Democratic primary for NJ House district held by absent Tom Kean

Former Navy helicopter pilot Rebecca Bennett emerged victorious in the Democratic primary in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. The district is currently represented by GOP Rep. Tom Kean, who has been mysteriously absent from Congress since March 5. Bennett, 37, secured the Democratic nomination by defeating three other candidates. The party views this district as one of the best opportunities for a pickup in the upcoming November 3 midterms.

In a Substack post on the eve of the election night, Bennett expressed her commitment to the district, stating, “NJ-07 deserves a representative who actually shows up for every family.” She emphasized her dedication to fighting for the families in the district, promising to work tirelessly on their behalf.

As a former Navy pilot with over 15 years of service in various roles, including helicopter pilot, experimental test pilot, and aircraft commander, Bennett was considered the frontrunner in the primary race. Several polls showed her with a significant lead over her Democratic rivals. In a recent TV ad, she positioned herself as “the only Democrat who can stop Donald Trump.”

Having raised more than $2.6 million for her primary campaign, Bennett focused on addressing the rising cost of living and pledged to reverse Trump’s tax cuts to improve affordability. The expansive 7th District, which includes Trump’s Bedminster country club, supported the president in the 2024 election but favored Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill in the 2025 gubernatorial race.

On the Republican side, Tom Kean ran unopposed in the primary but has been absent from Congress due to a reported “personal medical issue.” Despite not elaborating on the specifics of his ailment, Kean assured constituents of his recovery and return to his duties in the coming weeks.

Bennett expressed well wishes for Kean’s recovery but criticized his lack of transparency regarding his absence. She emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in public office and pledged to provide a more open and communicative approach if elected.

The 7th Congressional District is rated as a “toss-up” by the Cook Political Report, making it a highly contested race in the upcoming midterm elections. With Bennett securing the Democratic nomination and Kean expected to make a return to campaigning soon, the competition in this district is set to intensify as November approaches.
