During a motorcade ride to the U.S. Capitol on the day of President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, former first lady Jill Biden shared details of an uncomfortable exchange with Melania Trump.
In her new memoir, Jill Biden recounts how Melania blamed Joe personally for the FBI searching through her “private spaces” at Mar-a-Lago in 2022. She expressed compassion for Melania, having experienced a similar search herself and understanding the distress it can cause.
Jill Biden also mentioned the role of attorney John Bessler, husband of Sen. Amy Klobuchar, in escorting both women to the Capitol for Donald Trump’s second inauguration. She humorously noted that Bessler must have drawn the short straw for the task.
Reflecting on the limited interactions she had with Melania, Jill Biden recalled a frosty atmosphere in the car, with Melania attempting to steer the conversation towards the weather.

During the ride, Melania Trump gave a brief response when asked about her son Barron’s studies at NYU, attempting to shift the conversation to the weather.
Jill Biden also recalled reaching out to Melania after the 2024 assassination attempt against her husband, describing Melania as polite and controlled during their conversation.
On a different note, Jill Biden discussed her husband’s debate performance in 2024 and addressed his prostate cancer diagnosis, expressing uncertainty about whether he would have to resign due to the diagnosis.
