Wellington’s $1.9B Deal to Buy Hartford Funds

The recent acquisition of Hartford Funds by Wellington Management has sent shockwaves through the wealth and asset management industry. With a deal valued at $1.9 billion, Wellington is set to gain direct access to Hartford Funds’ extensive advisor relationships, opening up new opportunities for growth and expansion.

Hartford Funds, known for its mutual funds, ETFs, and 529 college savings plans, manages over $160 billion in client assets. By integrating Hartford Funds into its US wealth business, Wellington aims to offer financial advisors a broader range of investment options, enhanced support, and a more robust distribution platform. This move comes as the US wealth market continues to evolve rapidly, with advisors seeking access to a wider range of capabilities and resources.

Boston-based Wellington, renowned for its work on Vanguard funds, oversees more than $1.3 trillion in assets. This acquisition marks the company’s first venture into M&A since going private over 50 years ago. As the industry looks towards consolidation as a means of scaling operations, mergers and acquisitions are expected to be a key driver of growth in the coming years.

According to a report from Oliver Wyman and Morgan Stanley, the wealth and asset management sector is set to see around 1,500 mergers and acquisitions over the next five years, resulting in a 20% reduction in the number of firms. Major deals from last year, including BlackRock’s acquisition of HPS Investment Partners and Nomura Holdings’ purchase of Macquarie’s US and European asset management business, highlight the trend towards consolidation within the industry.

The changing landscape of the wealth and asset management sector has raised the bar for profitability, with mid-sized players operating on thinner margins as industry leaders capture a larger share of net new money. This shift is driving consolidation as mid-sized firms become attractive targets for larger players looking to achieve further scale and diversification.
