Mets bullpen struggles as bats go cold again in loss to Cardinals
The New York Mets bullpen, which has been a strength for most of the season, faltered in a 9-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night. This marked the second straight game in which the Mets relievers allowed at least seven runs and the 18th time this season.
The Mets pitchers struggled to contain the Cardinals, giving up 11 hits, four walks, and three home runs. The team’s lackluster performance at the plate only added to the woes of the bullpen, resulting in their third loss in the last four games.
The game started poorly for the Mets, with Austin Warren giving up a run early in the first inning. Warren struggled through his outing, allowing two earned runs, two walks, and one strikeout before being replaced.
David Peterson entered the game in relief of Warren and pitched for 3 ²/₃ innings. However, Peterson also had a tough outing, giving up crucial runs, including a two-run homer to Nelson Velázquez in the third inning.
Despite loading the bases in response, the Mets were unable to capitalize on the opportunity, as Cardinals pitcher Andre Pallante managed to escape the inning unscathed.
The Mets bullpen managed to get a few scoreless innings from Cionel Pérez and Jonathan Pintaro, but Pintaro gave up a home run to Alec Burleson in the ninth inning, sealing the team’s fate.
Overall, the Mets struggled on both sides of the ball, with the bullpen faltering and the offense failing to deliver when it mattered most. The loss was a tough blow for the Mets, who will need to regroup quickly to bounce back in their next game.
