Man found shot, slashed in burning South Loop apartment dies

Chicago police detectives are currently conducting a death investigation following a disturbing incident in the South Loop area. A man was discovered shot, slashed, and suffering from smoke inhalation inside a burning apartment on Wednesday evening.

The Chicago Fire Department responded to a fire at a second-floor apartment in the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue around 5 p.m. Upon entering the unit, firefighters found a 33-year-old man and immediately called the police after spotting a firearm and realizing that the victim had been shot.

Further examination revealed that the man had also sustained a laceration to his neck and suffered from smoke inhalation. He was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Detectives have been diligently working to piece together the events leading up to the man’s tragic death. They spent the night gathering surveillance footage and other crucial evidence from the building. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is scheduled to conduct an autopsy on Thursday to determine the exact cause of death.

CWBChicago was established in 2013 by a group of residents from Wrigleyville and Boystown who were dissatisfied with the inaccuracies presented at local Community Policing meetings. Over the years, our coverage area has expanded to include neighborhoods like Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other areas on the North Side. Despite the growth, our mission remains the same: to provide detailed public safety reporting with a level of context that surpasses mainstream media outlets.
