Shane van Gisbergen is NASCAR’s leading active winner on road and street courses with Sonoma victory

Shane van Gisbergen showcased his dominance on the winding tracks of NASCAR once again at Sonoma Raceway. The Trackhouse Racing driver secured his second consecutive victory at the 1.99-mile road course, solidifying his position as the winningest active Cup Series driver on road and street courses. Despite starting sixth, van Gisbergen led 74 of the final 83 laps, ultimately fending off a strong challenge from runner-up Chase Briscoe in his No. 97 Chevrolet.

Reflecting on his performance, van Gisbergen commended his team for turning his car into a winner after struggling in practice the day before. He acknowledged Briscoe’s impressive performance and admitted that a few more laps could have posed challenges for him. Briscoe, on the other hand, rued a mistake he made in Turn 1 with four laps remaining, which cost him the opportunity to overtake van Gisbergen.

Van Gisbergen’s victory marked the eighth of his career on road and street courses, surpassing 2020 Cup champion Chase Elliott in this regard. With this win, he climbed three spots to 14th in the points standings, positioning himself for a spot in the Chase. However, with no more road or street courses left in the season, van Gisbergen acknowledged the need to enhance his performance on ovals, an area where he lacks experience.

In the rest of the field, pole-sitter Ty Gibbs finished third, with Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell rounding out the top five. Notably, the top seed Tyler Reddick encountered power steering issues, finishing 36th and conceding the top spot in the Chase standings to Denny Hamlin. Despite his struggles, Reddick salvaged a point by setting the race’s fastest lap after repairs were made to his car.

Moving forward, NASCAR will return to Chicagoland Speedway after a seven-year hiatus for a 400-mile race on July 5. The upcoming race promises to be exciting, with drivers eager to make their mark on the 1.5-mile oval in Joliet, Illinois. As the season progresses, the competition is expected to intensify, with each driver aiming to secure their spot in the Chase.

Overall, van Gisbergen’s victory at Sonoma Raceway underscored his prowess on road and street courses, setting the stage for an exhilarating season ahead in the NASCAR Cup Series. Fans can look forward to more thrilling races as drivers continue to push the limits and compete for the championship title.
