Tony Dokoupil’s “CBS Evening News” Faces Challenges Over Fourth of July Weekend
Over the Fourth of July weekend, Tony Dokoupil’s “CBS Evening News” encountered a series of mishaps, adding to the ongoing issues plaguing Bari Weiss’ revamp of the network’s news programming.
One of the missteps included the program mistakenly airing an image of rapper Kanye West instead of Sean “Diddy” Combs in a report about President Trump considering a pardon for Combs. The error was quickly rectified for the West Coast broadcast, digital, and streaming versions of the show.
Despite CBS News declining to comment, a network source labeled the incident as a “one-off error” unrelated to staffing shortages. However, concerns were raised about the show’s quality control and staffing levels.
The network was busy preparing for a live three-hour special called “The Great American Block Party 250” hosted by Dokoupil and Nischelle Turner. However, the event faced challenges when bad weather forced an evacuation of the National Mall, impacting the broadcast.
While some staff members expressed embarrassment over the primetime special, CBS did not comment on why the program was not posted on its streaming service, Paramount+. Licensing agreements were cited as a reason for the delay, although other networks managed to stream their events online.
Concerns were also raised about the lack of planning meetings and strong leadership within the “Evening News” team, contributing to the show’s issues. The source pointed out deficiencies in staffing, decision-making, and overall direction of the program.
Despite these challenges, CBS News highlighted the show’s second-quarter ratings increase, indicating a positive trend in viewership. In contrast, rival networks NBC and ABC aired successful Fourth of July specials featuring popular performances.
These recent mishaps are part of a series of setbacks for the struggling “Evening News” program, including teleprompter failures and production difficulties. Dokoupil’s coverage from Taiwan and the unexpected collapse of a cameraman during a broadcast have added to the challenges faced by the show.
As the “Evening News” navigates through these obstacles, the network remains focused on improving the quality and consistency of its programming to retain and attract viewers.
