After ‘disgraceful week’ for Illinois House Democrats, Republicans call for more transparency, accountability
Illinois Republican lawmakers are urging their Democratic colleagues to support ethics reforms that would increase accountability for lawmakers accused of misconduct. The call for reform comes in the wake of two recent scandals involving Democratic members of the Illinois House.
Former Rep. Harry Benton, a Democrat from Plainfield, resigned after an internal ethics report revealed inappropriate behavior. Additionally, Rep. Carol Ammons, a Democrat from Urbana, was indicted on federal corruption charges for allegedly misusing campaign and state funds.
House Republican Leader Tony McCombie criticized House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch for not taking stronger action against the accused lawmakers. McCombie emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and consequences for those who betray the public’s trust.
Ammons, who has served as a state representative since 2015, faces 10 felony charges, including wire fraud and obstructing justice. Prosecutors allege that she and her daughter received financial benefits through illegal payments and misused campaign funds.
McCombie has called for a special investigative committee to look into Ammons’ actions, which could ultimately lead to her expulsion from the House. While Republicans have the power to initiate this process without Democratic support, they had not done so as of Thursday.
In response to the scandal, Republicans are pushing for ethics reform to prevent alleged wrongdoers from serving in the General Assembly. They also emphasize the need for transparency and oversight in the budget process to prevent misuse of taxpayer funds.
Senate Republican Leader John Curran suggested giving local prosecutors wiretapping authority to investigate public corruption, rather than relying solely on federal agencies. Some proposed measures include making legislative inspector general reports public, banning the use of campaign funds for criminal defense, and suspending pension benefits for officials charged with felonies related to their public duties.
Overall, Republicans are calling for greater accountability and stricter ethics standards in Illinois government to prevent future scandals and restore public trust in the legislature.
