How a ‘Walking Moai’ Is Helping People Move More, Connect Deeper, and Build Community

In Okinawa, Japan, a “moai” is a social support group that forms in childhood and stays together for life. This ancient concept of “meeting for a common purpose” is now hitting the pavement in Arizona. The Blue Zones Project Scottsdale is bringing this tradition to the local community through their Indoor Walking Moai program.

Walk, Talk, and Connect

Starting Thursday, July 9, through September 10, Scottsdale residents are invited to trade their solo gym sessions for a morning of movement and conversation. Held at the iconic Scottsdale Fashion Square, this free 10-week series meets every Thursday from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

Participants meet at the table outside the Capital One Café on the lower level. After a quick check-in at 8:45 AM, the group breaks into pace-matched teams for a 45-minute stroll through the air-conditioned mall. Whether you’re a power walker or prefer a gentle saunter, there’s a spot for you.

Perks of the Path

It isn’t just about the steps; it’s about the community. To make the mornings even sweeter:

  • First-timers receive a free Blue Zones T-shirt.
  • Post-walk perks: Enjoy free coffee provided by Capital One Café as you cool down and chat with your new walking buddies.
  • Raffles: Keep an eye out for occasional gift card giveaways for attendees!

Why It Works

Movement is vital, but social connection is the secret sauce for longevity. By combining gentle exercise with meaningful interaction, the Walking Moai program tackles two pillars of health at once. It’s a simple, consistent way to improve your well-being while building a neighborhood support system.

Ready to join the movement? Head down to Fashion Square this Thursday. For more lifestyle trends and community news, stay tuned to Brownstone Worldwide.
