Summer Pet Safety: How to Keep Your Furry Friends Cool and Safe in Extreme Heat
As record-breaking temperatures sweep through our neighborhoods, many of us are heading outdoors to enjoy the sunshine. However, this sudden surge in heat has a different impact on our four-legged companions who rely on us to keep them safe. Understanding how to manage these rising temperatures is becoming one of the most important lifestyle trends for responsible pet owners this season.

While we might feel the warmth, our pets experience it more intensely. They don't sweat like humans do, making them far more susceptible to life-threatening conditions like heatstroke. A quick run to the store can turn tragic in minutes; never leave a pet in a parked car, as internal temperatures can skyrocket even with the windows cracked.
Before heading out, use the 5-7 second rule: place the back of your hand on the pavement. If it’s too hot for you to hold it there, it’s too hot for their paws. You might be tempted to shave your pet’s coat to help them cool down, but their fur actually provides vital insulation against the heat and protection from sunburn.

Keep a close eye on your neighborly companions for signs of heatstroke, such as excessive panting, thick drooling, weakness, or bright red gums. If you notice these symptoms, move them to a shaded area immediately. Use cool: not ice-cold: water on their belly and paws to lower their temperature gradually.

To keep everyone happy, limit walks to the early morning or late evening when the ground is cooler. Always ensure they have access to fresh water and are up to date on parasite prevention, as pests are more active in the humidity.
