SpaceXAI Unveils Grok 4.6 With Advanced Reasoning and Agent Improvements

SpaceXAI released Grok 4.6 on August 12, positioning the new model as a major step forward for long-running AI agents, advanced reasoning, coding, and knowledge work. The release arrives as developers increasingly look for AI tools that can manage complex projects across multiple steps: not simply answer one prompt at a time.

Grok 4.6 is now available in Cursor, Grok Build, and the SpaceXAI API. It is also accessible through partners including OpenRouter, Vercel, and Cloudflare. The company says the model can research unfamiliar subjects, work across large codebases, build interactive applications, and review its own work before continuing.

The model includes a 500,000-token context window, text and image inputs, text-only output, and four reasoning settings: low, medium, high, and the new xhigh option. SpaceXAI reports that Grok 4.6 scored 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, matching GPT-5.6 Sol and trailing Fable 5 Max by one point. Those figures are based on published benchmark results and should be viewed as performance indicators, not guarantees.

For developers, pricing starts at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens for prompts below 200,000 tokens. Cached input is listed at $0.50 per million tokens, while larger prompts can cost more. The official Grok 4.6 documentation recommends prompt caching and context compaction for extended agent sessions.

There is also a security concern for Windows users. Researchers publicly shared ShieldBreak, an alleged Microsoft Defender zero-day that may allow local privilege escalation to SYSTEM access. Microsoft is investigating, and no dedicated patch has been released. Users should keep systems updated, limit unnecessary software installations, and monitor trusted security advisories. The Hacker News has reported on the disclosure.

As AI agents become more capable, careful oversight matters as much as speed. Developers should test Grok 4.6 in limited environments, review permissions, and require human approval for sensitive actions.
