FDA Upgrades Egg Recall to Highest-Risk Alert Over Salmonella Contamination
The FDA has upgraded its recall of more than 3 million dozen eggs from Midwest Poultry Services to a Class I alert, the agency’s highest-risk recall category. The eggs may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis, a bacteria that can cause serious illness, particularly among young children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems. Recalled eggs include white shell and brown cage-free varieties sold under brands such as Country Morning, Cal-Maine Sunups, Brookshire’s, Simple Truth, and Kroger. They were distributed through retailers and foodservice businesses in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and New Mexico.
If you have eggs at home, check the side of the original carton. Recalled packages may show:
- Plant codes P-1950 or 0840962
- Julian dates from 157 through 184
- Sell-by or best-by dates between July 20 and August 17, 2026
Do not eat, sell, or serve eggs that match the recall. Return them for a refund or place them in a sealed trash bag. If the eggs were moved to another container and you cannot confirm their origin, throw them away. Then wash your hands and clean countertops, utensils, containers, and refrigerator surfaces that may have contacted the eggs.
Salmonella symptoms can include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and headache, often beginning within 12 to 72 hours. Contact a healthcare provider if symptoms develop, especially in someone medically vulnerable.
