The Great Slow-Down Weekend: Family Fun Ideas Right From Your Front Porch
August is giving us two good reasons to linger a little longer: our Family Fun Month theme and National Dog Month, observed throughout August. National Dog Day arrives on August 26, making this a perfect season to celebrate the people: and pets: who make a house feel like home. (Awareness Days)
The best part? Family fun does not require a road trip, a packed schedule or a big budget. Sometimes it starts with moving a few chairs onto the porch and deciding that, for one afternoon, nobody has to rush.

Try a DIY backyard obstacle course with cardboard boxes, cones or pool noodles. Children can take turns guiding the dog through while adults cheer from the porch. For a quieter activity, hide a few dog-safe treats around the yard and let your pup sniff them out. A family photo walk around the block can turn into a neighborhood hello tour, too.
As the day cools, spread out a blanket for a porch picnic. Keep people food and pet treats separate, and check ingredients carefully: chocolate, grapes and xylitol can be dangerous for dogs. Fresh water, shade and frequent rest breaks matter, especially during August heat. Keep water play shallow and supervised, and let your dog step away when the gathering becomes too exciting. For Friday night, choose a calm outdoor movie. Add blankets, popcorn for the humans and a comfortable mat for the dog. Invite one nearby family, or simply wave to neighbors from the porch. Small gatherings can become lasting connections.
