The summer movie season is still swinging strong. Spider-Man: Brand New Day held the No. 1 spot at the North American box office for a fourth consecutive weekend, collecting an estimated $39 million from 4,006 theaters. The film has now earned more than $854.9 million domestically, according to The Associated Press.

That kind of staying power matters. Spider-Man is not simply benefiting from a big opening weekend; audiences continue choosing the movie weeks after its debut. AP reports that the film is on track to pass Avengers: Endgame as the second-highest-grossing domestic release ever, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The weekend also brought another major milestone. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey placed third with $19.5 million, lifting its domestic total to nearly $539.1 million. International earnings pushed the film to approximately $1.4 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time and Nolan’s biggest release to date.

There is more adventure ahead. Jon Turteltaub, director of the first two National Treasure films, confirmed that a third installment featuring Nicolas Cage is in development. Turteltaub said the script has been approved by Disney and described the project as “finally real,” while also noting that Hollywood plans can still change. Deadline reported the update.
