Don’t Let This Quarter End the Way the Last One Did
This morning the coffee is still steaming, the house is quiet, and I’m staring at a calendar that looks more like a battlefield than a schedule. Somewhere near the end of a quarter.
And I’m having that feeling again. The one you know too. The last stretch of a quarter has a way of sounding like an alarm clock. You look back at the notes you scribbled three months ago, the plans you swore were going to be different this time, and you realize the clock is running down again.
If I’m being honest with you, and more importantly, if you’re being honest with yourself, some of you are about to let this quarter end exactly the way the last one did. In a frantic scramble. With unfinished loops. With the same nagging patterns that have been dragging behind you for quarters now.
But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Today is the day we draw a line in the dirt. Today is the day we stop the bleeding.
The Ghost of Quarters Past
A few years back, I had a quarter that nearly broke me. It wasn't because of a lack of work, God knows there was plenty of that. It was because I was "busy" but I wasn't being "business." I was reacting to every email, jumping at every notification, and letting other people’s priorities dictate my sunrise.
That quarter ended in a blur of exhaustion. I promised myself the next one would be different. I bought a new planner. I downloaded a new productivity app. I even changed my morning alarm to a more "inspirational" sound.
Guess what happened?
Halfway through the next quarter, I was right back in the same ditch. By the time it closed, I was staring at the same pile of half-finished projects and feeling that same hollow pit in my stomach. Why? Because I changed my tools, but I didn't change my patterns.
As leaders, we love to blame the circumstances. We blame the "heavy season," the "difficult team member," or the "market shift." But usually, the common denominator in a chaotic quarter-end is the person staring back at you in the mirror.
The Pattern Audit: Looking for the Leak
Before you can finish this quarter strong and set the stage for the next one that actually moves the needle, you have to do a Pattern Audit. This isn't a performance review where you beat yourself up. It’s data collection. It’s "Coach in the Corner" time.
Think back over the last stretch, the last quarter, the last several weeks.
- What was the one thing that consistently ate your time but yielded zero results?
- Where did you say "yes" when your gut was screaming "no"?
- What conversation did you avoid that ended up costing you three times as much energy later?
If the last quarter ended in chaos and this one is ending in chaos, you don't have a time management problem. You have a boundary problem. You have a "pattern of friction."
The Subtraction Strategy
Most leaders think "finishing strong" means doing more. They think it’s about a 14-hour Sunday sprint to clear the inbox.
I’m here to tell you that finishing strong is actually about subtraction.
If you want to end this quarter differently than you ended the last one, you need to decide right now what you are going to stop doing. What is the low-value noise you’re carrying? Maybe it’s a report no one reads. Maybe it’s a meeting that could have been a three-sentence Slack message. Maybe it’s your own need to be involved in every single decision.
When you subtract the noise, you create the capacity to actually finish the one or two things that matter. One completed, high-impact move is worth a hundred half-baked "check-ins."
Practical Leadership Moves for the Next 24 Hours
Since we are in "Coach in the Corner" mode, I’m not just going to give you theory. I’m going to give you the playbook. Here are three moves to make before you lay your head down tonight:
1. Define the "Win" for Today
Vague goals produce vague results. Don’t just say "I want to get ahead." Say, "By 6:00 PM today, these three specific loops will be closed."
- The email to that key stakeholder.
- The feedback for the marketing team.
- The final decision on that project pivot.
When you define the win, your brain stops scanning for distractions and starts hunting for the finish line.
2. Install the Guardrails for Tomorrow
The reason this quarter feels like the last one is because you let the "old you" design the "new quarter." Stop it.
Before tomorrow morning, block out your first 90 minutes. That is your "Fortress Time." No emails, no social media, no fires. Just the heavy lifting. If you don’t protect your morning, the day will steal it from you. You can check out more on how we structure these mornings at ByrdOlogy In the Morning.
3. The Energy Reset
If you end this quarter burned out, you’ve already lost the next one. Leading from a place of depletion isn't "grinding", it's negligence. Take an hour today to do something that has nothing to do with your P&L statement. Walk, read, sit in the sun, play with the dog. Restore the vessel so you can lead the team.
Moving on Purpose
The invisible battle we fight as leaders isn't against our competitors. It’s against the noise. It’s against the "drift."
Last quarter drifted. This one might be drifting. But the next stretch? That’s where we move on purpose.
Don’t let the clock run out on this quarter without a deliberate act of leadership. Even if it’s just one move. Even if it’s just one "no" that protects your peace.
We talk about this every single day on the ByrdOlogy Podcast. We focus on the discipline, the clarity, and the boundaries required to lead people and companies without losing your soul in the process.
So, as you finish your coffee and look at that calendar, ask yourself: What is the one pattern I am leaving behind in this quarter, for good?
Write it down. Cross it out. And then, move.
Get clear. Move on purpose. And come home intact.
I’ll see you in the morning.
