A Mogul Picks Himself for the Halftime Show, Gosling’s Old Band Returns, and Matthew Perry Gets His Docuseries
Jay-Z is trading his usual role behind the Super Bowl halftime show for the spotlight. He’ll headline at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Valentine’s Day, as Roc Nation continues its partnership with the NFL. The rapper has helped shape the show for years; now, as NPR reports and Rolling Stone confirms, he’s taking the stage himself.
There’s a quieter musical surprise, too: Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields have reunited their gothic-folk duo Dead Man’s Bones for “Lost in the Night,” their first new song in seventeen years, accompanied by a music video. Deadline and Pitchfork report that the track marks a return for a project fans had all but filed away. It’s a welcome reminder that a side project can find its way back when the time feels right; the self-titled album that started it came out well over a decade and a half ago.
For viewers looking for something more reflective, Netflix’s three-part The One About Matthew Perry premiered today. Built around family archive footage and conversations with Perry’s sister and lifelong friends, the series offers a portrait beyond his best-known role as Chandler on Friends. His co-stars appear only in archival clips. Netflix Tudum and TVLine have more on the series.
And a farewell to Walter Koenig, the original Star Trek actor remembered as Ensign Chekov. The Associated Press reports that he died at his North Hollywood home at age ninety, with his daughter and niece by his side.
Between a halftime announcement, a reunited side project and a docuseries about someone the whole neighborhood watched for a decade, it’s a warm-feel week in entertainment. What are you most eager to watch, hear or remember?
