A college student thought she had a UTI. Then came fevers, fatigue and pain: “Something’s not right”
Emma Operacz’s Battle with Stage IV Lymphoma: A Story of Resilience
Emma Operacz was a vibrant 21-year-old student on the brink of graduating with a degree in psychology from Eastern Michigan University. Her life was filled with social activities, busy work schedules, and the excitement of upcoming graduation. However, her world took a drastic turn in June 2024 when she began experiencing symptoms that she initially dismissed as a urinary tract infection.
Despite taking over-the-counter medication and prescribed antibiotics, Operacz’s condition worsened. She developed a fever, extreme fatigue, and debilitating pain, leading to a hospital visit. A CT scan revealed swollen lymph nodes, prompting concerns of a possible pelvic infection or lymphoma. The reality of a Stage IV lymphoma diagnosis hit Operacz hard, as she grappled with the severity of her condition at such a young age.
With the support of her family and medical team, Operacz embarked on a challenging journey of treatments and hospitalizations. Her sister, Sara, stood by her side as she underwent chemotherapy and experimental treatments to combat the aggressive cancer. Despite numerous setbacks and moments of despair, including the cancer spreading to her central nervous system and brain, Operacz remained determined to fight for her life.
A turning point came when Dr. Deepa Jagadeesh, her oncologist, suggested a novel approach using a lung cancer medication called alectinib. The treatment proved successful, leading to Operacz’s gradual recovery and eventual remission. A bone marrow transplant, with Sara as the donor, marked a critical step towards ensuring long-term health and preventing relapse.
After months of isolation and medical procedures, Operacz emerged stronger and more resilient. She completed her graduate program in social work, with a newfound passion for helping cancer patients like herself. Reflecting on her journey, Operacz acknowledged the challenges she faced and the importance of embracing a new chapter in her life.
Operacz’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, faith, and the unwavering support of loved ones in the face of adversity. As she looks towards the future, Operacz is determined to rebuild her life and make a difference in the lives of others battling cancer.
