NYC doesn’t have enough hotel rooms for FIFA World Cup, must suspend Airbnb restrictions: business leaders

New York City is facing a shortage of hotel rooms as hordes of visitors are expected to arrive for this summer’s FIFA World Cup. Business leaders are urging Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin to suspend the current restrictions on Airbnb and other short-term rental platforms to accommodate the influx of tourists.

Groups like the Partnership for New York City and chambers of commerce for all five boroughs are calling for a temporary pause on short-term rental laws from June 1 to July 31 to allow more people to stay in the city during the games, as well as celebrations for the country’s 250th anniversary and Fleet Week.

The letter from the business groups highlights that the city’s hotel occupancy is already near 97% and that without additional capacity, hotel prices will surge, leading to spending leakage to New Jersey and the suburbs.

According to Vijay Dandapani, the chief executive of the Hotel Association of New York City, claims of too few hotel rooms are unfounded, stating that there is plenty of space available.

However, Airbnb and the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce are advocating for a temporary suspension of the short-term rental ban to prevent the loss of revenue and accommodate the influx of visitors expected for the World Cup and other events.

It is worth noting that other cities like New Orleans, Kansas City, and southern California cities have adjusted their short-term rental restrictions to accommodate major events, showcasing the potential benefits of a temporary reprieve in New York City.
