Act4, Kari Skogland to Adapt ‘Dead Weight,’ by Hildur Knútsdóttir

Iceland’s Act4, co-led by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, known for his roles in “Severance” and “Trapped,” has partnered with Kari Skogland, the director of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” to adapt Hildur Knútsdóttir’s latest novel, “Dead Weight.”

Skogland, who received a Primetime Emmy nomination for her work on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” has an impressive resume that includes directing episodes of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “House of Cards,” and “Vikings.” She is set to direct the adaptation of “Dead Weight,” which Act4 and Skogland Films have secured the screen rights to develop as a feature film.

Hildur Knútsdóttir, a rising literary star from Iceland, gained international recognition with the English-language release of her novel “The Night Guest,” praised by The New York Times as one of the best thrillers of 2024. Her book “Dead Weight” has been described as a dark psychological thriller and was published to critical acclaim, with Publishers Weekly calling it an “impressively subtle and slow-burning psychological chiller.”

Act4’s founder and producer, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, expressed excitement about bringing Knútsdóttir’s work to the screen, highlighting the novel’s emotional depth and cinematic scope. He praised Kari Skogland’s vision as the perfect fit for translating the material for a global audience.

Skogland, in turn, commended Ólafsson’s talent and the unique voice of Knútsdóttir’s book. She emphasized the flawed characters and feminine perspective that make “Dead Weight” a compelling story to bring to the screen.

Knútsdóttir revealed that she initially wrote “Dead Weight” as a stage play, making it a natural fit for adaptation. She expressed confidence in Act4’s ability to create something extraordinary from the book and eagerly anticipated seeing the project develop.

Act4, launched in 2022 by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Hörður Rúnarsson, and Jónas Margeir Ingólfsson, is making a mark in the entertainment industry with projects like “Reykjavik Fusion” and the upcoming series “Death of a Horse.” The company’s collaboration with Skogland Films on “Dead Weight” marks another milestone in their journey to bring innovative and captivating stories to audiences worldwide.

As Act4 continues to expand its portfolio and establish itself as a powerhouse in the industry, the anticipation for the adaptation of “Dead Weight” grows. With a talented team of creatives at the helm, including Ólafsson, Skogland, and Knútsdóttir, the film promises to captivate audiences with its dark and thrilling narrative.
