After TikTok, Chinese businesses like Kling ramp up AI for video

China’s entertainment industry is booming with the use of artificial intelligence tools to generate ads and film clips. Companies like TikTok parent ByteDance, Google, and Kuaishou are leading the way in text-to-video generative AI models. Kuaishou’s Kling AI platform is ranked fifth by research firm Artificial Analysis, showcasing the company’s innovation in this space.

According to Wei Xiong, a China internet analyst at UBS Securities, AI video generation has the potential to revolutionize the content industry by enhancing production efficiency, lowering barriers to creation, and unlocking new monetization models. With tools like Kling AI, users can upload images or text to generate video clips, making the process seamless and efficient.

Kuaishou claimed that Kling AI generated over 150 million yuan ($20.83 million) in revenue in the first three months of the year, with daily advertising spend on generative AI tools reaching 30 million yuan. Despite the market potential, there are still limitations in current model capabilities, such as clip length and motion consistency.

Chinese video AI companies face competition from U.S. giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft-backed OpenAI, who have also launched tools for generating video from images or text. However, Chinese companies like Kuaishou and Shengshu are making strides in this space, catering to a global audience and expecting substantial revenue growth.

Alibaba, another major player in the Chinese tech industry, recently released its video generation AI model Wan2.2, allowing users to control various aspects of the video creation process. With the rise of AI in filmmaking, companies like Alibaba are leveraging open-source models to empower users to customize and commercialize their products.

Winston Ma, an adjunct professor at NYU School of Law, believes that Chinese AI companies are well-positioned to lead the Generative AI revolution in visual digital entertainment, thanks to the vast amount of video-watching data available in the Chinese market. This shift towards AI as a filmmaker signifies a new era in the entertainment industry, where technology plays a crucial role in content creation.

In addition to video generation, Chinese companies are also developing AI tools for avatars and gaming. Baidu’s AI-powered digital human technology, Tencent’s Hunyuan World model for creating digital panoramic images, and other innovations are reshaping the way content is created and consumed in the digital age. As the AI industry continues to evolve, Chinese companies are at the forefront of driving innovation and transforming the entertainment landscape. The use of a “mesh” file format in gaming visuals allows developers to easily edit specific parts of the image, providing more flexibility and customization in game design. This technology, supported by Tencent, aims to standardize high-fidelity game asset generation and expand its influence in China’s game development landscape.

According to Daniel Ahmad, director of research and insights at Niko Partners, Tencent’s platform not only supports its internal development teams but also signifies the company’s ambition to lead the way in game asset generation. This move highlights Tencent’s commitment to innovation and its dedication to setting industry standards.

Niko’s research reveals that a significant number of game development studios in China are already leveraging AI for content generation to streamline development processes and reduce costs. However, the adoption of AI in game development also presents challenges, particularly in the realm of video and graphics creation.

Ahmad notes that while interest in AI technology is growing, there have been instances where poorly implemented AI in games has faced backlash from players. This underscores the importance of striking a balance between utilizing cutting-edge technology and ensuring a seamless and engaging gaming experience for users.

As the gaming industry continues to evolve, advancements in technology like the “mesh” file format and AI integration will play a crucial role in shaping the future of game development. By staying ahead of the curve and embracing innovative solutions, developers can create immersive and visually stunning gaming experiences that captivate audiences worldwide.
