After years of tension, Hungary and Ukraine hold talks on Hungarian minority rights
BUDAPEST, Hungary — Hungary and Ukraine have announced plans to initiate high-level discussions regarding the rights of Ukraine’s ethnic Hungarian minority. This development suggests a potential improvement in the strained relations between Budapest and Kyiv following Hungary’s recent change in government.
For years, the relationship between the neighboring nations deteriorated under the pro-Russian leadership of former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Orbán’s government, which was recently ousted in a landslide election, had implemented policies that hindered cooperation with Ukraine in various aspects.
The new Hungarian Foreign Minister, Anita Orbán, recently announced that discussions aimed at addressing the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine will commence shortly. These talks are expected to lay the groundwork for resolving key issues related to minority rights.
The dialogue between Hungary and Ukraine signals a potential shift towards a more positive relationship following years of tensions. The new Hungarian government under Prime Minister Péter Magyar is seen as more open to constructive engagement with neighboring countries.
Both countries have expressed willingness to restore trust and promote good-neighborly relations, marking a significant departure from the confrontational stance taken by the previous Hungarian administration. The recent diplomatic exchanges between Hungary and Ukraine reflect a renewed commitment to fostering cooperation and understanding.
