AOC to oppose all aid to Isreal even for Iron Dome after facing lefty backlash
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the progressive congresswoman from the Bronx and Queens, has made a significant shift in her stance on military aid to Israel. In a recent announcement, she declared that she will no longer support any form of military aid to Israel, including for defense purposes. This decision comes after facing intense pressure from the far left, which has been vocal in its opposition to US support for Israel.
Previously, Ocasio-Cortez had supported legislation to replenish Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, despite her criticisms of sending arms to the US ally. However, she has now reconsidered her position, stating that the Israeli government is capable of funding the Iron Dome system on its own. She emphasized that she cannot support sending taxpayer dollars and military aid to a government that consistently ignores international and US laws.
This change in stance has come after Ocasio-Cortez faced backlash from key figures within the progressive movement, including a social media spat with Young Turks pundit Anna Kasparian. The pressure to oppose all aid to Israel, even for defensive purposes, has been mounting on Ocasio-Cortez, leading to her decision to withdraw her support for military aid to Israel.
During a virtual event with the Democratic Socialists of America, Ocasio-Cortez revealed her change of heart, signaling a shift in the left’s opposition to Israel. She highlighted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s allies had approved a significant defense budget, indicating that Israel is capable of funding its defensive systems without US aid.
Ocasio-Cortez’s reversal on military aid to Israel reflects the growing skepticism of Israel within key factions of the left. She emphasized the need for US allies to understand that aid will be provided in accordance with the Leahy amendment and the Foreign Assistance Act, which govern aid to countries facing human rights violations.
Despite facing criticism for her foreign policy knowledge, Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to no longer support military aid to Israel demonstrates her commitment to upholding international and US laws. As speculation mounts about her potential presidential or Senate run in 2028, her evolving stance on foreign policy issues will continue to be scrutinized.
